On March 6, 2025, President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14233, establishing the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile. The order positions Bitcoin as 'digital gold' and consolidates the federal government's existing cryptocurrency holdings—primarily seized assets—under centralized management. Rather than authorizing immediate purchases, EO 14233 emphasizes budget-neutral acquisition strategies and a long-term holding approach. The order directs federal agencies to account for current bitcoin holdings and tasks the Treasury and Commerce departments with developing frameworks to grow the reserve while advancing U.S. leadership in digital finance.
